Higher Order Thinking (HOT) is the key to success
A 3 Day HOT4Learning Holiday Program
Teaching children how to think, not just what to think.
Great learners don’t just know the answers… they know how to think.
Many children can remember facts, complete familiar tasks and follow routines with confidence. However, when they are asked to explain their thinking, solve an unfamiliar problem or apply what they already know in a new situation, they often become stuck.
These are called Higher Order Thinking Skills, and they are some of the most important skills children need to become successful learners.
At Seeds of Knowledge, we believe these skills should be taught explicitly.
Our HOT4Learning program has been carefully designed to develop the thinking processes that underpin success across reading, writing and maths. Through engaging games, hands-on challenges and collaborative activities, children learn to think more deeply, solve problems creatively and become more independent learners.
Children are so engaged in the games, challenges and activities that they don’t even realise how much thinking they’re doing.

Why Higher Order Thinking Matters
School teaches children important knowledge and skills, but success at school relies on much more than remembering facts.
Children also need to be able to:
- analyse information
- make connections between ideas
- explain their thinking
- solve unfamiliar problems
- draw conclusions
- apply their learning in different situations
- think flexibly when the first answer doesn’t work.
These are the skills that allow children to move beyond memorising information and begin to truly understand what they are learning.
Like reading and maths, Higher Order Thinking is not something every child naturally develops. It requires explicit teaching, practice and opportunities to think deeply.
What Makes HOT4Learning Different?
HOT4Learning focuses on how children think, not simply what they know.
Throughout the program, children are challenged to:
- analyse information
- identify patterns and make connections
- justify and explain their thinking
- consider different possibilities
- solve unfamiliar problems
- apply what they already know in new situations.
By explicitly teaching these thinking processes, children develop skills that strengthen their learning across reading, writing, maths and beyond.
Over Three Fun-Filled Mornings, Your Child Will Learn To…
- 🧩 Think Beyond the Obvious
Children will learn to look deeper, explore different possibilities and recognise that there is often more than one way to solve a problem. - 💡 Solve Problems with Confidence
Through engaging challenges, children will develop practical strategies to approach unfamiliar tasks, evaluate different solutions and persevere when the answer isn’t immediately obvious. - 🔗 Make Meaningful Connections
Children will strengthen their ability to connect ideas, identify patterns and apply what they already know to new learning situations. - 💬 Explain and Justify Their Thinking
Rather than simply giving an answer, children will practise explaining how they reached their conclusions using evidence and reasoning. - 📖 Read Beyond the Words
Through interactive literacy activities, children will develop comprehension skills such as inferring, predicting, analysing and drawing conclusions. - 🤝 Collaborate and Communicate
Children will work together to discuss ideas, listen to different perspectives and solve problems as part of a team. - 🚀 Become More Independent Thinkers
Most importantly, children will leave with greater confidence in their ability to tackle challenges, think critically and approach learning with curiosity.
Who Is This Program For?
HOT4Learning is designed for children who are ready to strengthen the thinking skills that support success at school.
The program is ideal for children who:
- enjoy learning through games, challenges and hands-on activities
- are ready to strengthen their problem-solving and reasoning skills
- would benefit from developing deeper comprehension and critical thinking
- are learning to apply what they already know in new situations
- are curious and enjoy exploring different ways of thinking.
No prior knowledge is required.
The program has been designed for children in Prep to Year 4, with activities carefully adjusted to suit each child’s age and stage of learning.
Why Parents Love HOT4Learning
Parents regularly tell us they notice their children becoming more willing to think independently, explain their ideas and tackle challenging tasks with greater confidence.
The thinking strategies children learn during HOT4Learning don’t stay in the holiday program—they transfer into the classroom, helping children approach learning with greater curiosity, confidence and independence.
